About SFTS
Welcome to SFTS, your path to whole leadership. Imagine a seminary where you learn to seamlessly integrate spirituality, theology, and the practical arts of ministry…where each is as important as the other…where devotion, conviction, and action naturally blend together to form an integrated whole... where you learn to lead others towards wholeness as Christ led his disciples…where you have the reflective space to discern the unique shape of your own calling…where “your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” (Buechner) That’s what you’ll find at San Francisco Theological Seminary. The need for leaders of faith and vision—who can help others to know, love, and serve the living God in an increasingly diverse world—has never been greater. At San Francisco Theological Seminary, we embrace this challenge, drawing on the limitless wellsprings of God’s own creativity, wisdom, and energy. As we embrace God’s vision of wholeness for the world, we prepare whole leaders for the whole church. Our Mission Statement says it directly: “We are committed to the education of students in spiritual formation, critical theological reflection, and the skills and arts of ministry, to serve in congregations, the wider church, the classroom, and the public sphere.” Connect to Wholeness
Visit: We’d be happy to customize a visit around your individual needs—whether you’re a pastor or a prospective student. We can schedule time for you to visit classes; attend a chapel service; participate in a community lunch; and meet with current students, faculty, staff, spiritual leaders, and more.Tour: We offer every type of tour, from brief campus tours to extensive historical explorations. Or, if you live near our campuses, you are welcome to drop in and tour on your own at your convenience anytime. Explore: Attend special group events for prospective students such as “Inquirer’s Weekends” and "Seminary Days." Engage: Get involved with activities on campus, take a short-term course, or schedule a visit from SFTS representatives to your church. As a pastor, these offer ideal ways to connect your congregation with its Presbyterian Seminary in the West and to share resources and hope for God’s work for wholeness in and through the church. If you’re considering seminary, this sort of personal contact is a great opportunity to clarify and discern God’s call.
Worship: In San Anselmo during academic semesters, join us for a 30-minute chapel service (10:15 a.m., four days a week) and the time of fellowship and refreshments that follows. Be open to God’s presence. Start a conversation. Ask questions. Look around. Monday chapel is traditional Presbyterian worship, Tuesday is contemplative prayer, Thursday is a praise service, and Friday is always Communion. You can also participate in “All Student Chapel” held once a month on our Pasadena campus. Share: You’re welcome to join us for community lunches, visits from distinguished church leaders, and other campus events such as casual gatherings in which you’ll have opportunities to talk informally with students, staff, and faculty. Call: If you can’t come to us, we’ll come to you. Let us know your needs and when you’d like us to visit. If you can’t visit right away, contact us anyway. There’s a lot we can do via phone or e-mail to help you, including putting you in touch with SFTS partners in your area. |
