72 Hours of Discernment

72 Hours of Discernment is a weekend RETREAT that includes conferences and workshops on spiritual discernment and God’s Call to Ministry in your life.

San Francisco Theological Seminary invites you to:
  • Stay and relax on our beautiful, historic northern California campus in Marin County.
  • Meet current students, staff and faculty members who have struggled with their Spiritual Discernment, and moved through these struggles to fulfill God’s Call.
  • Build community with others who are in the process of discerning God’s Call in their lives.
  • Attend Sunday Worship at a Church where the pastor is an SFTS Alum and have a conversation with the pastor about “Everything seminary didn’t teach me.”
  • Experience a time of intentional Christian community where the theological, spiritual, and practical aspects of God’s Call can be discerned and integrated.
  • Visit the Graduate Theological Union, a consortium of nine independent theological schools representing several denominations, as well as affiliated academic centers that include a range of faith traditions.

During 72 Hours of Discernment,
we look at the THEME of Three Days (or 72 hours) in scripture and focus on the similar themes between the scripture passages and how those themes can help us with spiritual discernment.  There are three main conferences, each given by a professor from SFTS.  They are on the following themes:

  • Three days of intention:  Each passage tells a story that includes a purpose or intention.
    • Intention is:  1) an act or instance of determining mentally upon some action or result; 2) the end or object intended; purpose.
      • Esther 4:1-16
      • Jonah 1:1-3
      • Acts 9:1-10.
  • Three days of process: Each passage tells a story that includes a process.
    • Process is: a systematic series of actions directed to some end; a continuous action, operation, or series of changes taking place in a definite manner.
      • Genesis Chapter 42-45
      • I Samuel 3:1-11
  • Three days of courage:  Each passage includes a main character who was being called to display significant courage.
    • Courage is: the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery.
      • Story of Queen Esther:  Esther Chapters 4-7
Visitors are provided tools to assist in their personal discernment process. 72 Hours of Discernment offers two evening spirituality workshops that will include the following topics:
  • Meditation: Prayer as Listening
  • Centering Prayer
  • Lectio Divina: a method of Praying and Listening to Scripture
  • Spiritual Direction and Mentoring
  • A special evening workshop on recognizing God’s Grace during the “in-between time” after you have made a decision to accept God’s Call and actualizing the Call in a form of ministry, titled: Moving from 72 hours to 40 days.

San Anselmo Campus Tour Group Information

Montgomery ChapelSFTS offers brief campus tours, extended historical tours, and opportunities to participate in seminary chapel services and community lunches.

One way to take full advantage of the many rich and exciting opportunities at SFTS is to start with our 30-minute chapel service (during the school year at 10:15 a.m. M, T, Th, or Fri) and the brief time of fellowship and refreshments that follows. Monday chapel is a traditional Presbyterian worship service, Tuesday is a contemplative prayer service, Thursday is a praise service, and Friday is a Communion service.

Following chapel, you are invited to take a guided walking tour around campus. Tours are led by Seminary staff. During tours, one hears about the history of this Presbyterian Seminary of the West, explores the historical campus buildings, and learns more about the role of theological education in the world today. Most groups enjoy walking the full breadth of the campus grounds; however, cars may be used to transport groups around the campus if needed.

Geneva Hall If you wish, you may conclude by joining us for community lunch in Upper Alexander Hall. Here you have an opportunity to talk informally with students, staff, and faculty. Should you be interested in bringing your group on campus for chapel, a tour, or for lunch, we request three weeks advance notice.

For more information, please contact Sarah Campbell at 415.451.2830 or scampbell@sfts.edu.
