San Francisco Theological Seminary

This event is for preachers who wish to begin planning their preaching for Advent 2008 to Easter 2009 and seek to nurture their spiritual life through a deeper, personal engagement with scripture. Each day begins and ends with contemplative worship and includes both a scholarly and prayerful approach to the Gospel Lectionary Texts (Year B) from Advent to Easter.


Event Leaders
Rev. Dr. Herman C. Waetjen
Emeritus Professor of the New Testament, San Francisco Theological Seminary. Dr. Waetjen is the author of The Gospel of the Beloved Disciple: A Work in Two Editions, Praying the Lord’s Prayer: An Ageless Prayer for Today, and A Reordering of Power: A Sociopolitical Reading of Mark’s Gospel. He is also co-author of New Proclamations: Year A, 2007-2008: Advent Through Holy Week. Dr. Waetjen will lead participants in a daily study of Gospel texts.
Rev. Dr. Sam Hamilton-Poore
Director of the Program in Christian Spirituality and Assistant Professor in Christian Spirituality, San Francisco Theological Seminary. In addition to serving as pastor (and preacher) for several congregations since 1984, Sam is also a spiritual director and author of Earth Gospel: A Guide to Prayer for God’s Creation (Upper Room 2009). He will lead preachers in daily prayer and meditation with the Gospel texts.



Additional spiritual directors will facilitate the afternoon small group sessions.
Worship
Rev. Elizabeth Ford
will lead morning and evening prayer. She is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), an experienced pastor/preacher, spiritual director, and currently a Ph.D student in Christian Spirituality at the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley.

Stephen Iverson, Michael McCarty and Deborah Arca Mooney will lead contemplative music.

Event Cost

Single Room: $600 Includes tuition, meals & single room at Baird Hall*
Shared Room: $500 Includes tuition, meals & shared room at Baird Hall
Commuter: $325 Includes tuition, Monday dinner & all lunches

*Baird Hall offers on-campus housing and features a full kitchen, dining hall and large lounge / living room. Each guest room hosts two single beds. Dormitory style showers and restrooms are located on each floor.
