Core courses and area required courses are projected to be offered regularly in both Northern and Southern California at the times and cations indicated after the course description below. If you plan to register for courses, you should consult the GTU Course Annouloncement and the current course offering for the Southern California campus.

The GTU schools collectively offer over 300 courses each year, at the introductory master's (numbered 1000-1999), intermediate master's (2000-3999), advanced master's (4000-4999) and doctoral (4000-6999) level.

OT 1200 Pentateuch and Former Prophets* [Chaney, Coote; A. Park] An introduction to Genesis through II Kings and the history of ancient Israel pertinent to understanding these books. A systemic approach, seeking an integration of political, literary, social, economic, religious, and theological factors.

OT 2154 Prophets: Division to Exile# [Chaney, Coote; A.Park] A systemic approach, integrating political, literary, social, economic, religious, and theological factors, to the pre-exilic prophets in their historical context. Includes a brief survey of later OT history and literature.

OTFT 4300 Israel and Korea:Comparisons [Chaney, Cho]
Exploration of comparisons between biblical Israel and historic Korea in the light of the intertwining of Korean and U.S. political, socio-economic, and ecclesiastical history and of the Korean Church's interpretation of the Hebrew Bible. The seminar will begin with introductions to Korean history, the Korean Church, and the experience of Korean-Americans.

OT 5100 8th Century Prophecy and Society [Chaney] Hebrew exegesis of oracles from the 8th century prophets; reconstruction of the socio-historical dynamics of the period using all available data and macrosociological methods.

NT 1004 NT Introduction: Gospels and Acts* [Park, Wire] Critical introduction to the four Gospels and Acts assisting readers to determine the social contexts in which these narratives were written and the meanings of Jesus' life and death in those settings. Readings from other 1st century authors. Prior study of OT strongly recommended.

NT 1005 NT Introduction: Paul's Letters* [Park,Wire] An introduction to the life, work, and theology of Paul as they are reflected in his 7 undisputed epistles in the NT and in other related documents. Special attention to specific historical circumstances and theological themes. Hermeneutical questions will also be raised in view of students' future teaching and preaching ministries.

This course will introduce some of the recent trends in postmodern biblical hermeneutics and heuristically interpret selected passages from the Gospel of Matthew from the perspective of religio- cultural pluralism.

HSST 4142 Calvinsims after Calvin [Ocker] An historical and theological examination of Calvin and subsequent movements in the 16th - 20th centuries, including Calvinist orthodoxy, Presbyterianism, Puritanism, Socinianism, early Baptist movements, Remonstrants, 19th century liberal theology, dialectical theology, and Barthianism.

ST 1084 Theology I* [Love] An introduction to systematic theology. Beginning with philosophical bases for faith in God's revelation, examination of contemporary Reformed theology in comparison with feminist theologies on the subject of God and human existence.

CE 2011 Contemporary Theory in Social Ethics# [Robb] A review of theological ethicists' works with a focus on how they advocate that Christians engage in moral reflection on social issues.

CE 2501 Economic Justice# [Robb] An introductory course in Christian social ethics, designed to share the language and concepts of the discipline of ethics and bring them to bear in the economic arena.

For serious students of ethics, feminist theory, and New Testament and exploration of some different contemporary feminist methods of analysis and then explore different methods of reading the New Testament as a resource to construct alternatives to patriarchy.

ED 4350 Feminist Pedagogy and Christian Education [Mercer] Working with feminist themes of multiplicity, particularity, power/knowledge, and solidarity, an exploration of the implications for church education of these new ways of thinking about knowledge. Discernment and testing the implications of such perspectives for contextual practices of Christian Education.

EDBS 2046 Teaching Bible in Congregations [Mercer, Chaney]
This course, team-taught by faculty in the fields of Bible and Education, explores the practices of teaching the Bible in particular congregational contexts. The Common Lectionary texts for the Advent season are used to explore exegetical, pedagogical, and interpretive issues involved in teaching the Bible in a local congregation.
